Creating flat abs is one thing. But creating and maintaining a six-pack is in a whole different area code! For the sake of sanity, we’ll save the talk on six-packs for a later date. For now though, let’s just address goal number one, which is getting flat abs.
Ab Workout Results
If you haven’t paid much attention, this topic has been quite hot over the past quarter century. And it likely won’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. But that’s understandable.
The stomach is looked at as a prized possession and it is truly the holy grail in fitness circles. You might be able to lift twice your bodyweight in iron off the floor, bounce a stack of pancakes off your butt and hoist a Galapagos tortoise overhead, but what about your stomach?
What happens THERE is often the telltale sign that shows you really do work hard in the gym. And this applies to both men and women alike.
Fast forward to the “demand” for a flat stomach and you have an equal “supply” of workouts to satisfy this need. Think of this like equal parts macaroni and cheese. If you get too much macaroni, you might gain weight.
If you get too much cheese… well, I guess you still might gain weight. Or maybe you have a gluten issue or lactose intolerance, and… hold the phone. We’re getting way off topic here! If you ever see me do that, just tell me to shut up and I’ll get back on course.
The point is, the “best” ab workouts are not enough for flat abs. In fact, they won’t do diddly squat for a flat stomach if you have blubber between your ears and don’t pay attention to detail.
Just ask your good friends, “the experts.” THEY say that the truth hurts. Well, that’s subjective. But I do feel that it depends on what the truth is.
For example, I can give you some truth right now that might hurt your feelings. Or at least, it might cause a bit of alarm. But I mean you no harm. Hey, that rhymed!
Here’s the deal… If you’re unsatisfied with the results you’ve been getting from you ab workouts, there is good reason why. And if you’re open to knowing these reasons, then read on. If not, cover your eyes and skip to the bottom.
Ab Exercise Form
It should come to no surprise to you at this point in your life that good form means everything. If your form is off, everything else will be off too. You are quite simply setting yourself up for disaster.
What it boils down to is, you can only fake your way through training for so long. If you are doing what looks like an amazing ab workout on paper, but executing poor form, don’t expect good results.
I like to use the word “gross” in describing bad form with exercise. If your movements are fast, rushed, sloppy and you look out of control, that’s all gross. Slow down, pay attention and move with grace and ease instead.
Eating Habits for Flat Abs
It’s a shame that I even need to bring this up again. For the millionth time, you cannot excel with an ab workout if you eat like a goat! A one and one half-hour amazing ab workout will quickly be trumped in 5 minutes if you go to the Chinese buffet in the building to the left of the gym as soon as you are done with your last rep.
Yes, you can do a lot of undoing in a mere 5 minutes! All it takes is one heaping plate of General Tso’s chicken and you will do a hefty amount of damage. The Americanized fare you find on these buffet tables never ceases to amaze me either. And who is this General Tso anyway?
Also, let us not forget about the late-night eating, the imbibing of wine, spirits and beer, and all the other justifications one goes through who wants to have their cake and eat it too. Folks, let me be the first to tell you, it’s OK to be hungry! In fact, I highly encourage it.
Get yourself some discipline, shrink your eating window and then watch your midsection shrink as well. And please don’t eat small meals every few hours throughout the day. Stick to two or three respectable meals, and eat nothing in between!
Abs and Cardio
Let’s address the big, pink elephant in the room. You can fight me all you want on this one, but it’s not going to change my position. You absolutely have to do some form of cardio to get flat abs!
Otherwise, that soft, gooey substance in your midsection known as fat will remain intact until the Saints come marching back in.
Now don’t get me wrong. There’s no need to dance around on a treadmill for hours on end to “get your cardio.” In fact, you do not even need to board the treadmill. What you DO need to do is get your heart rate elevated and keep it there for an extended period of time.
You see, your body doesn’t know the difference between running, biking, swinging kettlebells, doing squat jumps or crawling across the floor. It equates an elevated heart rate to hard work being done. And that causes fat to melt.
Take my advice on this and aim to get your heart rate elevated while working out. If you are crafty like me, you can do this and work your abs at the same time. This is how I devised My Six-pack Challenge.
That way you will burn calories and thus, burn more fat. Then the awesome ab workout that you tell your friends at work about will make a lot more sense and be more effective.
Working the Rest of Your Body for Abs
Are you still there? Good! Getting a flat stomach is more involved than just doing countless sets of crunches over and over again. Just think about that for a second. You are only working one area of your body.
Not only are you setting yourself up for imbalances, but you are not tapping into the secrets of getting a flat stomach. By working your entire body, and here’s the important part, adding muscle to said body parts, you do two things.
First of all, you create a balanced physique. Secondly, by adding more muscle, you automatically boost your resting metabolic rate. This lends handy to more overall caloric expenditure, which in turn, helps melt fat from your stomach.
Simply put, you can’t spot reduce. And this is also why doing some form of cardio is so important. It helps burn fat throughout your entire body, which includes your abdomen.

OK, we’ve come to the end of this journey. I can ramble on longer about why the best ab workouts are not enough for flat abs, but I have to go run some errands. I left you with enough information to at least get started.
